PublicHistoryGlobal.Info-Public Debates and Global History

About US

The advent of technological innovation and the introduction of the internet in the early 1990s fundamentally transformed our methods of communication and interaction with families, communities, and the global landscape. This digital revolution not only redefined traditional physical spaces, turning them into vibrant gathering hubs for social interactions—such as cafes, community centres, and public parks—but also sparked the creation of virtual spaces, like social media platforms, forums, and online chat rooms, where people could connect and engage regardless of geographical barriers. This shift has enabled more inclusive, diverse interactions, allowing individuals from different backgrounds to share ideas, experiences, and cultures in ways never before possible.

The information shared in public forums often lacks a cohesive narrative about human evolution and the development of our civilisation. Instead, it typically reflects the perspectives of individuals, groups, communities, and regions. Much of what we learn about various aspects of society—such as culture, ideas, and social progress—comes from personal viewpoints rather than being verified or explained by experts in those fields.

A unified and inclusive perspective, recognised globally and accepted by mainstream academia, is essential. This perspective fosters a cohesive worldview, reinforces the narrative that all regions of the world have contributed to various fields of knowledge throughout history, and underscores the fact that we share a common ancestry

Understanding the basic concept of history is vital for all global citizens to engage effectively in the digital world, which has a worldwide reach. Possessing a smartphone grants instant access to most information available globally. Posts on platforms like TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Threads, and Instagram can be viewed by audiences across the world and in diverse communities. A personal opinion shared online can sometimes cause outrage and division. By developing a fundamental understanding of our history and evolutionary journey, as a field of ‘Public History’, we can promote cohesion and tolerance among different groups of people, cultures, and religions.

Most of those comments and statements are divisive, aiming to spread hatred and intolerance based on tribe, religion, and race to create division. A comment or statement on a digital platform can cause mis-and disinformation if not corrected by expert opinion or public knowledge. If left unaddressed, it may fuel further mis and disinformation, becoming a dominant narrative that complicates societal and governmental efforts to foster peaceful and harmonious coexistence among communities, especially in a globally interconnected, multicultural world.

Public history, in this regard, serves as a crucial tool to combat misinformation and disinformation. Particularly when populism and false narratives aim to weaken rational and philosophical arguments, reversing the ideological debate in many developed countries that are fundamentally rooted in social cohesion and multicultural identity.

This website aims to promote public history and enhance essential historical knowledge within society through digital media, countering misinformation. As a history enthusiast with a BA and an MA in History, and currently preparing for a PhD, I find that history empowers me and broadens my understanding as part of the wider human community. I believe that with a solid foundation in historical knowledge, we can build a more unified and tolerant world. Every internet-connected citizen should possess basic historical knowledge, and academic and history enthusiasts can play a vital role in enlightening global citizens through public history.
